Welcome to the Bow Island Legion
The first Legion meetings were held in homes of members, with Legion functions being held in the Community Hall. Later, the Branch purchased its own building, and many volunteer hours were put in by Legion members with assistance from the Auxiliary, enlarging the building twice to its present size.
The first Branch President was Larry Nicholas with Elsie Willis as the first Auxiliary President.
The Legion and Auxiliary ran the first Kids' Day, held on July 1, for many years. We continue to be active in the Community with Bingo on Monday evenings and Darts on Wednesday evenings. The Legion recently obtained permits for lounge service and Nevada tickets. As well, a variety of events, such as the Veterans Supper and Christmas Craft & Gift Sale, and fund-raisers are held throughout the year. Not to be forgotten, is the Legion's Remembrance Day Service and Poppy Campaign.
The Legion believes in supporting our Community, and through its various fund-raising activities, has funds available for local charitable donations each year. All requests for donations must be made on the form and sent to the Legion at least one month prior to the event.
The Legion offers four types of memberships. Ordinary membership is open to those who have served in the military or RCMP. Associate membership is open to children, grandchildren and spouses of those eligible for ordinary membership, or spouses of associate members. Affiliate Voting membership is available to those who do not otherwise qualify for membership, and who support the purposes and objects of the Legion. Affiliate Non-Voting: If you are a non-Canadian citizen or a non-Commonwealth subject from an Allied nation and support the aims and objects of The Royal Canadian Legion, you may apply for Affiliate Non-Voting membership. New members are always welcome.
